How to become a VTuber without a camera or webcam
Last updated:
Short answer: yes, you can be a VTuber without a camera. A VTuber is anyone who streams or makes videos as a virtual character instead of showing their own face. Face tracking with a webcam or phone is one way to move that character, not a requirement: the simplest form, a PNGtuber, reacts only to your voice. With EmbedAvatar that takes about five minutes, costs nothing and needs no webcam.
What do you really need to be a VTuber?
- A character – your avatar. It can be drawn, built in an editor or commissioned from an artist.
- Something that makes it move: either your face (a webcam or phone with face tracking) or your voice (a microphone).
- Streaming software that shows the avatar above your game or desktop, for example OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop or Meld Studio.
- A microphone – you need one for streaming anyway.
What you don't need: a webcam, an iPhone, a rigged model, drawing skills or an agency. These only come into play when your avatar should follow your head and facial expressions.
Three ways to become a VTuber
As of October 2026, details from the providers' own pages (sources below). Costs are for the software; a model made for you by an artist always costs extra.
| 3D avatar (e.g. VRoid Studio + VSeeFace) | 2D Live2D with face tracking (e.g. VTube Studio) | PNGtuber by voice (e.g. EmbedAvatar) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Avatar | 3D model, e.g. built in VRoid Studio | Rigged Live2D model: artwork in layers, rigged in Live2D Cubism | 2–3 images: idle, speaking, optionally blinking |
| Moves with | Your face via webcam | Your face via webcam, iPhone or Android | Your voice |
| Hardware | Webcam; the PC runs tracking and the 3D model next to game and stream | Webcam or phone; the PC shows the model next to game and stream | Microphone; the overlay only swaps images |
| Effort | Build the character in the editor, then set up tracking | Highest: draw in layers and rig, or commission both | Minutes: build a character or upload images |
| Software cost | VRoid Studio: free; VSeeFace: free (Windows only) | VTube Studio: free, optional one-time purchase removes the watermark; Live2D Cubism: FREE version or paid PRO | EmbedAvatar: free |
Sources: VRoid Studio on Steam (“3D character maker”, free, Windows and macOS), VSeeFace (free, Windows, face tracking “through a regular webcam”, VRM models), VTube Studio on Steam (“free to use with all its features”, optional DLC “Remove Watermark” for webcam tracking), VTube Studio (Live2D, webcam and iPhone tracking, Steam, iOS and Android), Live2D Cubism (FREE version, PRO with full functionality for a fee).
When is EmbedAvatar the right choice?
- You have no webcam, or you don't want a camera on at all.
- You want to start today, without drawing, rigging or commissioning a model.
- Your PC or laptop is already busy with the game: there is no tracking, the overlay only swaps images.
- You want to stay anonymous, or keep your face and room off stream.
- You stream with OBS Studio, Streamlabs Desktop or Meld Studio – to Twitch, YouTube or anywhere else.
When is it not?
- Your avatar should turn its head, follow your eyes and mirror your facial expressions. EmbedAvatar has no face tracking.
- You already own a Live2D or VRM model. EmbedAvatar shows images and can't load these models; use VTube Studio (Live2D) or VSeeFace (VRM).
- You want hand or full-body tracking, or a 3D avatar.
Starting as a PNGtuber doesn't lock you in: the overlay is one browser source that you can hide or remove at any time, and your character and channel name stay yours. If you switch to Live2D later, you need a rigged model of your character – EmbedAvatar doesn't turn images into one.
Become a VTuber in 5 minutes with EmbedAvatar
- Create a free account with Google or Twitch. You get a starter avatar and an overlay right away.
- Build your character in the character builder – 5 styles from DiceBear under CC0 – or upload your own images for idle, speaking and optionally blinking (PNG, WebP, GIF or JPEG).
- Add the overlay link to OBS Studio as a browser source. In OBS the overlay reads your microphone level via obs-websocket: OBS Studio guide. For Streamlabs Desktop and Meld Studio, a control page in your browser detects when you speak.
- Set the threshold just above your background noise, or let Calibrate measure it.
- Go live. Your avatar talks when you talk and blinks on its own.
